17 Therefore do not be vague and thoughtless and foolish, but understanding and firmly grasping what the will of the Lord is.18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit. 19 Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices [and instruments] and making melody with all your heart to the Lord,20 At all times and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.
V17 We need to understand and “firmly grasp” the will of the Lord in our lives. How can we firmly grasp the will of the Lord? You will never understand and be able to grasp the will of the Lord until you get to know Him. That comes through quiet time with Him. Just having an ongoing relationship.
V18 Do not drink to get drunk, instead be filled with the Holy Spirit. Instead of depending on physical things (alcohol) to stimulate, let the Holy Spirit stimulate you. This will be more fulfilling and satisfying anyway.
V19 Speak to one another with psalms and spiritual songs, offering praise with voices and making melody with all your heart to the Lord.
V20 At all times and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the father. This one scripture is one that is so challenging in my life. To give thanks all the time seems to me to be almost impossible. This means that no matter what happens in life, no matter the circumstances you find yourself, you should give thanks to the Lord. If my heart was truly intimate with Christ, I would feel thanks in my heart in all circumstances.
I do have an optimistic personality and rarely feel unthankful, but of course there are times when I concentrate on wrongdoing done to me. At those times, I am definitely not being thankful.
